about

DISCO SUCKS was born several years ago when Michael saw a documentary about the notorious Disco Demolition Night at Comiskey Park baseball stadium in Chicago.

The Disco Demolition Night, hosted by local DJ Steve Dahl, took place on Thursday, July 12, 1979. It saw some 50,000 fans – over twice the average attendance of a Chicago White Sox game at the time – turn up to see a crate of disco records blown up with pyrotechnics.

The ill-conceived radio WLUP promotion resulted in chaos, a riot and… some 16,000 days later, the record you’re now listening to.

The irony of the Illinois rock fans naturally falling into that primal 120bpm disco tempo as they chanted about burning records was irresistible. But it’s taken quite some time to find the original news footage.

Once the crucial clip was tracked down it was simply a matter of Michael pulling out his trusty six-string bass and vibing with the angry mob until another classic Sons Of Ken dance floor stormer was born.

PHASE SPACE looks into more personal history: Spike pulled apart a tune by an earlier group in which The Kens had been involved, and methodically mashed, modified and mangled its components until something new and deliciously different emerged.

DISCO SUCKS (HARDER) takes that '79 disco demolition back onto the dance floor with a punishing 2023 electro reinvention.

LET’S GO HOME, the final cut on the EP, is about a current and more universal concern: being at a club and feeling like the whole thing is too noisy, the dance floor is too crowded, and everyone smells slightly too much of Red Bull.

If you’ve ever been on a night out and felt a little bit overwhelmed by it all, this one’s for you.
