The first full-length LP from The Sons of Ken, WE ARE THE KENS, shows off the UK Discotronica duo’s wide, wild, and weirdly wonderful creative range. Electronic music is often described as over-manicured and soulless, but practically every note on the album is a first or second take, lending We Are The Kens the spontaneity of jazz, and the raw immediacy of punk.

The album opens with the title track, which is a set of instructions describing how to make your very own Sons of Ken number, underpinned with the the band’s signature slamming beats. 

The second tune, FOOLS GOLD, is a collaboration with Marcella Detroit, the multi-talented songwriter behind hits from Eric Clapton’s Lay Down Sally to the worldwide No.1 Stay by Shakespear’s Sister. It’s pretty good.

The bangers keep coming, from the punishing uptempo electro of MURDER BEAT to mellow future-jazz shuffle SHA-BOOP. 

THE NUMBERS STATION dances around the mysterious iconography of Cold War espionage, while WHAT’S HE DOING IN THERE? is a vintage science-fiction yarn given an ultra-modern nu-disco makeover. Another friend of the band, Angie Giles, guests on vocals there.

The tension inherent in modern relationships, mediated through telephones, cameras, and myriad messaging systems, provides the subject matter for ON HOLD while, by contrast, the timeless yearning of WISHIN’ ON U could relate to any lovelorn couple since the dawn of history.

WHISTLING IN THE DARK is a late-night slice of urban paranoia, while (REMIX) is all about gaslighting and is, it has been confirmed, definitely not a remix.

But the band’s playful nature never lets things get too serious, and GET PHAT pokes a little fun at changing fashions in body shapes and JOE VERSUS THE SINGULARITY combines boomer technophobia with a heartfelt musical tribute to at least two of the Kens’ musical icons.
